Ice Storm/Power outages

Just watching Here and Now on my expressvu dish - the footage of the ice storm damage really brings back some memories for us! We had no power for a week in '98 when the big ice storm hit eastern Ontario, Quebec and of course the northern US states. I was rather disturbed to see the efforts made by one family to bring power into the house - the propane stove in the house is a BAD IDEA. There were quite a few deaths here from people burning their houses down with bbqs indoors, candles burning, etc. Carbon monoxide poisoning from having generators in the garage as well.

We have a generator and EmmBeeDee made up a cord that he can run from the 220 output on it that we plug into the jack for our dryer. That gives us a lot more juice in our house than our first attempt using the 110 output.

With the 220 we can pump water, run the freezer and fridge and a few lights.

We have UPSs on our TV equipemnt and computers which allows us to use them with the generator as well - its output is a bit erratic and can be hard on electronic equipment.

One thing I was thinking is that it will take a lot longer for your power company to get the power back on for you folks because you don't have the trucks coming in from a large area to help out. We had trucks from the rest of Ontario and northern US helping us. It became quite a game to see how many different power companiy trucks you could spot.

Well, I hope all the RTR members are doing okay and that you get your power back soon.

Oh we can get trucks but not where the poles are broken off.

They are gone back with tracked equipment hauling poles.

last power outage we had i put in a wood stove and a small generator (2500watt) in the shed the next summer. small price for peace of mind.

I actually meant that it would be very difficult for crews and trucks to get there from other provinces to help out. What with having to get them onto the ferry and then cross the whole province to get to the trouble area.

I'm bettin' that, this spring, the Bonavista Trail is gonna look just like it did after the big ice storm they had up there two years ago.

Mike and Doug and I ran the trail in the early spring of 2008, and it looked like this, thanks to the damage the ice storm caused to the trees...

I really hate alders-with a passion. Ive been whipped so many times (by alders) I just despise them. If I get to a trail thats grown in with those sadistic weeds, I just turn around. Did I mention that I really don't like alders?

Doug's helmet visor didn't even survive that route, that day. It was like running a gaunlet of people punching you in the face, for about 5 kms, on one segment.

We debated getting out of the woods and using the main road as a bypass, but in the end we hung in, toughed it out, and rode the trail all the way from Shoal Harbour to Port Rexton, fallen alders be damned!

I think my handguards were the things I was the most happy about having on that run.
