Default Hard To Believe It's Gone

Hard to believe the landmark fishing stage in the background of this shot is gone. Last week's big storm wiped out several old stages and properties in both the Quidi Vidi Village and Lower Battery areas...

I was wondering if any of the locations in those wonderful tourism ads were effected.

Here I had my hopes built up- thought you were talking about the snow! As time progresses more and more of these fishing stages are dissappearing. With the decline of the fishery and adversity of the weather we are slowly losing part of our native culture.

It's particularly sad in the case of The Battery and Quidi Vidi, since having fishing stages and twine stores within the heart of a city is extremely rare, if not exclusive to St. John's. It's part of what gives St. John's some of it's quaint rural feel, and the unusual contrast of having ten story buildings right next to old fishing stages.

Sad that it is gone for sure. But really not 'hard to believe', when you think about it. Most of these stages are a wonder that they stood up to the sea for as long as they did.

'Hard to believe' in the sense that they have been iconic St. John's landmarks for so long, not that they weren't vulnerable, which they certainly were/are.
