Went for a ride today...never ending hi-jack thread

Trailer (Lugg and Roll) hasn't really been used much other than hauling it back from Penticton BC where I bought it (along with the bike) six years ago. The stuff on top of the trailer is a stand that fits into the rear of the trailer allowing vertical storage (if you have enough ceiling...

Went for a ride today...never ending hi-jack thread

FJR is back on the road after being down for lack of tire rubber since October. (I do have almost 2,000 km on the F700GS so far this year.) At 13 years and almost 160,000 km, it still rides (and looks) almost new.

What did you do to your bike today?

    Yep, surface prep is key.

What did you do to your bike today?

Ouch! Your JB Weld has a bigger "footprint" this time. Hope it holds.

What did you do to your bike today?

FJR - changed the tires to Dunlop Roadsmart IV. Replaced the battery after 13 years and 160,000 km. Bled brakes and clutch, cleaned calipers, lubed levers, foot brake pedal and shifter linkage. Panicked a bit about a bit of oil from the final drive when I removed the wheel but I think it was...

What did you do to your bike today?

Never got far enough into engines to use TTA or TTY bolts although I understand the principle. I am always in a quandary when it comes to dissimilar metals - especially steel into aluminum. Had issues with engine mounting bolts (steel into aluminum casting). I got them out without a lot of...

    Campgrounds Corner Brook

Not much information on this park. Doesn't really show up in Google Map searches although you can see something at the south end of Blue Pond in satellite view. Is there a website (or even a Facebook page? Could be a convenient stopping point if one was coming over on the night boat to PaB and...

    Regenerative Braking...

Not so different from riding behind someone who uses engine braking. (Especially in the days when people predominantly drove standards) I would like to see "brake" lights that responded to deceleration irrespective if from braking, downshifting or even letting off the accelerator at highway...

    Campgrounds Corner Brook

Depends on how close you want to be. Nice ride out from Corner Brook to Blow Me Down Provincial Park - in Lark Harbour just under 50 km from CB. Sir Richard Squires PP is further at almost 90 km... I have stayed at both of these and found them to be decent. Although you may encounter...

    2024 Solar Eclipse, April 8, 2024

You can't fix stupid! Not like there weren't ample warnings or lots of opportunity to get protective eyewear. Real numbers likely very much higher.

    Batteries!!

In extreme cold, a battery blanket and block heater could still be worthwhile in some places. While the battery may not freeze and rupture, cranking power is less on a cold battery. Block heater keeps the oil a little thinner so less cranking resistance as well. When I was parking my car...

    Batteries!!

FYI (Internet wisdom, but essentially correct), there is not really any need to worry about lead chemistry batteries freezing, as long as they are fully charged... (DOD = Depth of Discharge) Might not apply to an old battery with significantly reduced capacity (not sure), but I haven't worried...

    Batteries!!

I gave some thought to a lithium battery when I was buying the one for my FJR. Low temperature performance is MUCH better than in the early days. NOCO has been getting some decent reviews but I couldn't find one that would fit. The Antigravity batteries are nice but spendy. I had such good...

    Batteries!!

The Optimate is a good maintainer. I am using a NOCO Genius 1 amp device that does what I need. Slow, temperature-compensated maintainer with settings for AGM, lithium and regular lead-acid. Still, I don't use it much and only for a few hours at a time unless I have to charge a new battery or...

Went for a ride today...never ending hi-jack thread

Which "loop" is that? Doesn't look like that bike offers much protection from the cold.

Sunny, calm and up to 16°C today. Cold and/or wet for most of the next week.

    Batteries!!

Don't know if it is the tender or not. FJRs seem to be pretty easy on batteries and I am just replacing the OEM Yuasa on my 2011 now (at 13 years, 160,000 km) - without tender use. The amount the bike is ridden is a factor as is proper care. Lead chemistry batteries hate deep discharge...

Went for a ride today...never ending hi-jack thread

I have heated gloves but don't use them often - not in the past couple of years. They are MUCH better than the heated grips when it is really cold as they are warm to the fingertips and on the backs of the hands. On the other hand, I find them bulky and awkward. For a short run, I'll use the...

    Batteries!!

AGM or flooded lead-acid battery? AGM will last longer and is less subject to vibration damage. Still, some bikes are harder on batteries than others. Might not be a bad idea to monitor voltage on your 640 to verify the health of the charging system. Chronic undercharging or overcharging...

Went for a ride today...never ending hi-jack thread

RDF = Rain, Drizzle, Fog?? Heated grips really take the edge off as does a heated jacket liner. I think I have used the jacket liner more this spring than I have in a while. In New Brunswick, it adds at least two to three weeks to the season in the spring and similar in the fall. Salt on...
