Battery Tenders

I like battery tenders, but not a fan of leaving them plugged in for long periods of time. Over the winter I usually will plug in a battery for a few hours once a month and then unplug. Reason being, I find that they sometimes generate a little heat which in turns evaporates the water from the unsealed batteries. And sealed batteries usually stay charged and only requires a top charge maybe once a month.

I recently lost a NEW battery in my quad (battery is probably two years old, but the quad was only used 2 maybe 3 times). Maybe it was a cheap battery or faulty battery. The original non sealed battery lasted a good 10 years, using my method above.

I'm wondering who here leaves a NON sealed battery plugged into a battery tender for LONG periods of time. I'm wondering if I should leave my brand new battery plugged in constantly?
