Motorcycle Rider Training - Frank Discussion

Am a bit leery about initiating this discussion here, but this is a local motorcycle forum made up of mostly experienced riders and mature, sensible individuals, so am looking for some intelligent and frank input. This topic has been on my mind over the winter and a new riding season is just around the corner ... and with it a new crop of motorcyclists will be taking to our roadways as they do every year. As most of us know, there are three main outfits offering rider training here in the province; Safety Services, Two Guys Training and Avalon Motorsports. Though there are many similarities between the three programs being offered, up to this point, there has been little effort to try and bring them all in line with a provincial set of standards for motorcycle training. For 2017, the Motor Vehicle Division has directed that the previous 1-day programs being offered by the three previously mentioned vendors will no longer be allowed and a single training course is to consist of a minimum of two eight hour on-bike sessions. While this move goes a long way to "levelling the playing field" when it comes to the standards of motorcycle training in the province, as far as I know, it hasn't addressed some of the other aspects surrounding rider training such as course curriculum, instructor training and certification and Road Testing consistency.

Other provinces have, or are considering bringing in mandatory motorcycle training for new riders, as well as European-style, graduated licensing ... with this, comes a legislated set of standards which ALL outfits offering rider training have to follow. Such an approach is long overdue here in Nfld. IMHO.
