This is not good!

"A State of Emergency has been declared in Bay de Verde and a large part of the community has been evacuated due to a fire raging at the local fish plant.

Mayor Gerard Murphy says firefighters are struggling to get the upper hand on the blaze in high winds and the greatest fear is caused by the variety of toxic chemicals involved including amonia. He says the smoke and chemicals are a toxic mix that are spreading out into the community.

Murphy says all residents from the rock cut in have been asked to leave their homes. He says temporary shelters have been set up at Tri-Con Elementary, the local Lion's Club and in nearby Old Perlican. He says most people are choosing to stay with family and friends in nearby communities.

Murphy says it's a very difficult fire to fight. He says efforts to recruit a water bomber to the area have fallen through because it appears no aircraft are available this time of year. He says he's instructed the fire chief to pull back it there's any imminent danger to firefighters.

In the meantime, Murphy says the loss of the plant which employs about 700 people, is a huge blow to the community and to the area at large."
