Well cloudy, a couple light showers, and 8ºC is still great riding weather. This is not so much a ride report as just a few photos and a hint that the Kittiwake Coast and Eastport Peninsula should not be missed (I'm sure many here have done this already).
The Kittiwake Coast runs along the Gander Bay and Northern Bonavista Bay, passing through communities like Frederickton, Musgrave, Lumsden, New-Wes-Valley, Centreville-Wareham-Trinity, and Gambo. There are a few loops into communities which means studying the map in advance pays off. There are gas stations in Musgrave, Lumsden, Centreville-Wareham-Trinity, Gambo, and possibly in-between.
Shipwreck in Frederickton
Most of the western side of the Kittiwake loop is decorated with amazing sandy beaches. Musgrave Harbour has a very long sandy beach, and makes good use of it for some community events.
Lumsden and Windmill Bight Park
The loop through New-Wes-Valley has lots to see and take pictures of. There was a recommended Chinese restaurant in Brookfield or Badger's Quay that burned down the very next day. Tragically, one of the owners lost their life.
Be sure to take the short road to Pool's Island.
New-Wes-Valley
Near Greenspond I found a snowmobile trail that was hard to resist. The high sand content in the soil makes for fun traction, and the moderate scattering of rim ending buried rocks make for great practice on the pegs. Be careful about getting ahead of your line of sight. I hit a washed a double washed out section (the only one) going way to fast. Basically I came off the bike and went into a second washed out section with just hand contact. Fun times.
Maintained Trail Near Greenspond
Heading east, I decided to take a detour to the Eastport Peninsula. It was about 50 km and and hour in total. Well worth the visit and definitely the highlight of an entire day riding.
Eastport and Salvage
The Salvage Money Shot
Salvage ends with a trail that has a "4x4 Vehicles Only" warning. If you can stomach the first, really steep, loose stone hill, you can manage the remainder (more of the same). You'll find a great vantage point for the entire area.
Top of the Trail
Salvage Harbour
On the way back to St. John's I make the detour at Chance Cove and came out at Bellevue. Chance Cove had some nice views, and I should have keep going as far as Chapel Arm to see what's there. Who wants to stare at the TCH all day? Maybe next time.
